Ableton Push 2: Sampling from vinyl

Ableton Push 2: Sampling from vinyl

Alongside my 'First Look' video, I also made this video which showcases the sampling capability of Push 2 and Live 9.5.

You can check out the track I made here: https://soundcloud.com/skioakenfull/beastie-boys-sure-shot-ski-oakenfull...

Ableton Push 2: First Look

Ableton Push 2: First Look

I was really lucky to get my hands in Ableton Push 2 a week before release so I could make this video.

The new waveform manipulation is amazing! It takes me back to the days of using an AKAI S3000 sampler.

Roots Manuva - Witness (1 Hope) Deconstruction in Ableton Live

Roots Manuva - Witness (1 Hope) Deconstruction in Ableton Live

Here's another deconstruction. I love this track by Roots Manuva, originally released in 2001 on Big Dada Records.

In the video I program the beat, and design the bass and arpeggio sample. There's also a little jam at the end with some vocals provided by fire_sign.

Also check out the great Ninja Jamm app from Ninja Tunes.

Clean Bandit & Jess Glynne - Real Love Deconstruction in Ableton Live

Clean Bandit & Jess Glynne - Real Love Deconstruction in Ableton Live

Here's another deconstruction. I chose this one as I was given it as a reference track for a writing session I did recently. I love Jess's vocals and think it's a great pop track.

In the video I look at some basic music theory, recreate the main elements, focus on production techniques and a little bit of sound design too! Hope you like it.

Ableton Deconstruction: Herbie Hancock - Chameleon (FFL!)

For this FFL! on May 8th 2015, Ski Oakenfull and EMC instructor Tom O'Grady deconstruct the classic 'Chameleon' by Herbie Hancock using Ableton Live.

Shop 'n' Chop (Sampling Tutorial in Ableton Live)

Shop 'n' Chop (Sampling Tutorial in Ableton Live)

I was set the challenge of creating a track entirely from hand-picked samples taken from vinyl.

Check out my sampling and beat-making process in the resulting video episode, Shop 'n' Chop!

Disclosure - Latch Deconstruction in Ableton Live

Disclosure - Latch Deconstruction in Ableton Live

Here's a live deconstruction I did of this amazing track by Disclosure. It was probably the hardest one I've done as it has a triplet beat and the chords are so complex, but it was fun nevertheless!

I made one mistake in the heat of the moment which was putting double the amount of the glitchy crackles in the beat.. they should have been just once in every bar.

Anyway, you can download the Ableton project here :: http://ow.ly/JFNeh so you can check out all the parts I programmed - You'll need to register with Point Blank to download all their free content If you haven't already.

I'm also providing the arpeggio and chord screenshots to download below. Have fun!!

Moderat - Bad Kingdon Deconstruction in Bitwig Studio

Here's a deconstruction I did of this great track by Moderat using Bitwig Studio. The main devices used were Polysynth, Drum Machine & Sampler.

Paul McCartney - Wonderful Christmas Time (Xmas special)

Paul McCartney - Wonderful Christmas Time (Xmas special)

It's that time of year again, and after last year's 'Last Christmas' deconstruction I thought I'd tackle another Xmas classic! I've always liked this track mainly for the distinctive synth riff, so I was keen to research exactly what synth he used, and what the chords were.

It turns out it was a CS-80 (here's evidence!) , so I set about recreating the patch using Analog.

Also I found this great photo of Paul in the studio playing his CS-80 around this time (maybe even during the session!).
