EMC² - Deconstructing Avicii - Levels

See video

This is the first in a new series of tutorials from Ski Oakenfull covering a variety of aspects of electronic music composition. Point Blank want you to get involved in this series, so if you can think of well known track for Ski to deconstruct musically in the next tutorial then hit us up on twitter with:
#emcrequest @point_blank + your suggested track title.

In this video Ski introduces the brand new EMC2 course. Using Ableton Live, Ski looks at the chords in two sections of Aviici's massive track 'Levels'.

You can learn more techniques like this on Point Blank's online Electronic Music Composition course and the forthcoming EMC2 course, both of which have been developed by Ski himself. The courses show you how to develop the musical aspects of your tracks in an easy to understand way, without getting bogged down with too much scales and theory.

Exclusive Ableton Live 9 Demo - Audio to Midi Feature

See video

I was lucky enough to be given a Beta version of Ableton's new Live 9 a couple of months ago. One of the most interesting features is the new Audio to Midi function, which sets out to give Melodyne a run for it's money. The great thing is how it is integrated into the contextual menu alongside the existing 'Slice To Midi' function, so you have a lot of audio converting power at your fingertips!
The beat extraction works really well, managing to pick out Kick, Snare & Hat sounds and recreate the pattern using a Drum Rack. This presents so many exciting possibilities, especially on the remix front. The chord extraction was a little bit more fiddly, but with the powerful Midi devices and editing possibilities that already exist in Ableton, you can quickly get some great results.
Check out the video where I take a beat from AudioMontage (aka Jimpster) and combine it with the intro chord progression from Kraftwerk's Trans Europe Express.

New Year's Eve 2012 DJ Set live from my Flat

See video

After having so much fun doing my USTREAM DJ set last year, I decided to give it another go. I went for digital only music rather than vinyl this year as it was difficult to set up near my decks.. I had a few technical issues, mainly down to bandwidth.. I had to set the upload to the lowest level otherwise the connection kept dropping.. I also pushed the levels a bit hard in the middle so apologies for the distortion. Hope you like it.. See you next year! Here's my USTREAM channel.. Please subscribe!

Two new tracks due for release in 2013

2012 has been a great year, and I've especially enjoyed the fact that my tutoring at Point Blank has spawned two collaborations with students of mine, both leading to releases in 2013.
Firstly this is a track I worked on with Kris Holiday from Saint Paul in the US. It's due out early 2013 on Big Mama's House Records.

Secondly here's the track I worked on with Faraj Alkuwari otherwise known as Youngs2ar from Doha in Qatar. It's also due out early 2013 on Endemic Digital.
You can get a sneak preview here...
